[T-REEF Trial Board] 7’8” Speed Master — A Mid-Length Built for Speed Across the Wave Face

Shape

MEET THE BOARD

I wanted to shape a mid-length that both shortboarders and longboarders could enjoy naturally.

That idea led me to design the 7’8” Speed Master, one of T-REEF’s trial boards.

With this board, I focused on three things: easy takeoffs, speed across the wave face, and the ability to draw your own lines with control.

For shortboarders looking for a little more length.
For longboarders wanting to explore more responsive lines.

I wanted to create a board that combines the glide of a longer shape with the feeling of riding the wave face on your rails.

THE DESIGN STORY

An Outline Designed to Catch Waves and Build Speed

For this 7’8”, I started by thinking about making takeoffs easier.

I kept the nose relatively wide at 17 7/8”, creating an outline that helps the surfer catch waves when shifting their weight forward.

From paddling to takeoff, and onto the wave face.

I wanted those movements to connect smoothly, allowing the surfer to feel the glide early in the ride. But easy takeoffs were not my only consideration.

I also worked on the tail rocker, aiming to reduce the risk of pearling while allowing the board to follow the wave face with control.

Catch → Glide → Speed
Catching the wave and naturally building speed.

That is the foundation of the Speed Master.

Round Wet Deck × Down Rail: Turning Water Flow into Speed

For the deck, I chose a rounded shape called a Round Wet Deck.

The rails are soft Down Rails, shaped with a thin, refined foil.

When I shape a surfboard, I think about how water moves around the entire board, not just underneath it.

When a surfer engages the rail on the wave face, water flows around the rails as well as across the bottom.

That is why I pay attention to how the water moves from the deck, along the rails, and toward the tail.

Bottom Water Flow + Rail Water Flow

When the rail engages the wave face, I want the water to flow smoothly without unnecessary resistance.

The goal is to use that flow to create a smooth, continuous feeling of speed.

Round Pin Tail: Drawing Your Own Lines at Speed

For the tail, I chose a Round Pin.

When riding fast across the wave face, I believe it is important to have the freedom to choose your own line, rather than simply going straight.

The smooth outline of the Round Pin allows water to flow naturally along the rails and toward the tail, helping the board transition into turns.

Even at 7’8”, I wanted the board to remain controllable at speed.

For the fins, I chose a Single + Stabilizers setup.

The single fin provides that long, flowing glide, while the stabilizers add support and control.

Speed → Hold → Control

Maintaining speed while connecting one line to the next.

That is the feeling I wanted to achieve through this tail and fin combination.

FEEL THE SPEED MASTER

The 7’8” Speed Master has been available as a T-REEF trial board, and many surfers have had the opportunity to ride it.

One of the most encouraging pieces of feedback has been about its speed in chest- to shoulder-high waves.

“The feeling of flying across the wave face.”

Catching a wave, engaging the rail, and drawing your own line while carrying speed. That is the kind of surfing I had in mind when designing the Speed Master.

I would especially recommend this model to intermediate and advanced surfers.

For shortboarders looking for a little more length.
For longboarders wanting to explore quicker, more responsive lines.

I hope both will have the chance to experience this board in the water.

Catch the Wave. Feel the Flow. Find Your Line.

I invite you to experience the 7’8” Speed Master for yourself.
