MEET THE RIDER
Mayu is a beginner surfer who primarily enjoys stand-up paddleboarding and slow, relaxed surfing in the beach breaks of Shonan. With a surf trip to Kauai on the horizon, she decided this was the perfect time to create her own custom board — something suited for mellow waves and easy paddling.
She also had two key requests: a board that would be easy to paddle into waves as a beginner, and something lightweight enough for her to carry on her own (as she's on the smaller side).

THE DESIGN STORY
We shaped a 7’6” custom funboard that balances performance and practicality, carefully considering the rider’s body type and the wave conditions at their home break.
Key points in size selection:
During our consultation, I focused on making the board easy to paddle into waves, especially as she’s a beginner, and lightweight enough for her to carry by herself. While we considered shorter boards, the 7’6” length provides better paddling propulsion and a smoother glide, allowing for more stable takeoffs. Although a wider board would add stability, I prioritized everyday usability and set the maximum width at 22 inches — just wide enough to comfortably grip with her hands, keeping it practical and manageable.
Nose, tail, and bottom design:
The nose shape was finely adjusted to suit the rider’s preferences, emphasizing the feel during riding. The tail features a rounded design, which facilitates fundamental turning maneuvers like cutbacks and makes rail control easier, prioritizing smooth handling. The bottom shape and rocker are designed to enhance performance on small waves, which the rider primarily enjoys. The nose allows plenty of water intake, guiding the flow naturally along the bottom, helping the board drive forward even on days with less powerful waves.
This board is ideal for an intermediate beginner looking for a balance between ease of use and performance. It will make surfing her usual beach breaks easier and more fun!
