[Custom Mid-length] 7’6” Fish Twin. Glide → Drive → Flow in Small Waves
Shape

MEET THE RIDER
This 7’6” was custom-designed for a surfer who is 166 cm tall and weighs 58 kg.
It is his second T-REEF custom board.
His first board was a:
5’11” × 20” × 2 3/16” Shortboard
5-Plug Multi-Fin Setup
A board designed with responsiveness and performance in mind.
For his second board, the request was different: something primarily for smaller waves that could generate speed more naturally by working with the energy of the wave.
Rather than simply adding volume because it was a “small-wave board,” we built this 7’6” Fish Twin around one idea:
Glide → Drive → Flow

THE DESIGN STORY
Creating glide with 7’6” of length
In small waves, there is less power coming from the wave itself.
On a shortboard, the surfer often has to work harder through paddling, takeoff and acceleration to generate speed.
For this board, we used the 7’6” length to increase the board’s contact with the water and create natural glide.
The purpose of the extra length wasn’t simply to make the board bigger.
It is length designed to create glide.
21 1/2” of width to harness weaker wave energy
Just as important as the length is the 21 1/2” width.
Rather than pulling the outline in aggressively from the center toward the tail, we maintained width through the back half of the board before transitioning into the Fish Tail.
This creates enough planing area - the surface of the board that allows it to skim across the water - to help maintain speed even when the wave has limited power.
Length creates glide.
Width supports planing.
The balance between the two forms the foundation of this design.
Fish Tail × Twin Fin = Creating drive and flow
The wide Fish Tail provides the planing area needed for smaller waves, while the deep split in the tail allows water to release smoothly. We paired it with a fixed Twin Fin setup.
Rather than treating the fins as an isolated element, this board was designed as one complete system:
Outline × Fish Tail × Down Rail × Bottom × Twin Fin
The idea is not to constantly force the board through small movements, but to use the rail and allow the entire board to flow through the wave.
Hold → Drive → Release
The Fish Twin setup is designed to connect these movements naturally.
Down Rails: keeping flotation without sacrificing response
At 7’6” × 21 1/2”, the board already has plenty of planing area.
This allowed us to keep the volume where it is needed through the length, width and center of the board, while refining the rail volume with a Down Rail.
The board should provide enough flotation while paddling.
It should glide naturally once moving.
But when the surfer engages the rail, it still needs to respond.
We didn’t want to create a board that floats well but becomes difficult to put on rail.
Even in a small-wave design, the board should respond naturally when the surfer asks it to turn.
Nose Entry → Flat → Slide V: Keeping the water moving
The bottom design follows a progression of:
Nose Entry → Flat → Slide V
Water first enters beneath the board through the nose.
The Flat section carries that water and helps move the board forward, while the Slide V toward the back allows the water to move outward and release from the tail.
To us, a surfboard bottom is more than just a shape.
It is about how the board receives water, carries it and releases it.
For this 7’6”, we designed that movement around:
Catch → Carry → Drive → Release
TWO BOARDS, TWO WAYS TO CREATE SPEED
The first 5’11” Shortboard was designed around responsiveness and performance, a board that reacts directly to the surfer’s movements.
The new 7’6” Fish Twin approaches speed differently.
The length creates glide.
The width provides planing area.
The Twin Fin generates drive and flow.
The Fish Tail allows the water to release.
These are not simply a “short board” and a “long board.”
They are two boards designed for the same surfer to generate speed in different ways, under different wave conditions.
At T-REEF, we don’t determine the dimensions of a custom surfboard based only on height and weight.
What kind of waves do you surf?
What boards have you ridden before?
What are you feeling on your current board?
And where do you want your surfing to go next?
The length of this board was chosen because of the glide and speed this particular surfer needed for smaller waves.
Using the length without being controlled by it.
From Glide to Drive.
From Drive into Flow.
Finding the energy that exists even in a small wave, allowing the board to receive it, carry it and move naturally with the surfer.
That is what this 7’6” Fish Twin was designed to do.
